What is the function of a Filter
Your engines use a filter to remove engine contaminants from the Air, Fuel, Oil, and Coolant. What is a Micron?
The term micron is used as a term of measurement to measure the efficiency rating of a filter. The micron or micrometer is expressed as:
- 10-6 meter
- One-thousandth of a millimeter
- One 25th of a thousandth of an inch
- A micron is a millionth of a meter
- One .000039 of an inch.
The lower the Micron rating on a particular filter the more containments its will remove. The higher the Micron rating the larger the particle size it will remove. In perspective, a human hair is said to be about 50 micrometers wide.
What is the difference between a filters Absolute Micron and a Nominal Micron rating?
Most premium filters state a Micron rating to clarify the size of particles which are filtered at a certain efficiency. When the efficiency of the filter is at least 98.6%, this is termed as the Absolute Micron rating/filtration. When a filter shows a Nominal micron rating is just a commercial trick for all efficiencies lower than 98.6%, meaning that for the same micron rating (for ex. 10 µ) in the case of nominal rating. A filter that expresses its efficiency rating with a Nominal Micron rating says that not all particles will be captured in the filter, The inability of this filter to remove the suspended containments means that wear-causing particles are now entering your engine.
The questions you need to ask yourself is would it be wise to spend more money now to preserve my engine or will I take the chance and pay for the repair when my powertrain warranty has expired?
