What does an Oil Pump Do?
Your internal combustion engine relies upon the Oil Pump to keeps a supply of pressurized supply of lubricating oil moving to the engines parts that are in motion.
How Does your Oil Pump Work?
The oil pump inside any engine is the essential element of the engine's mechanical system and operational health. Your oil pump pressurizes the oil to circulate throughout your engine. It starts at the oil pan and is sucked up through the pickup tube. The oil pump is a gerotor pump that then pressurizes the oil and sends it through your oil filter, and then to your main oil gallery. After the oil has circulated through your engine, it cycles back to the oil pan through drain back passageways. The pump itself is mostly run by your camshaft and has either gear or rotor type components that pressurize the oil.The oil pump lubricates the bearings in the engine and is probably one of the sturdiest components in a vehicle. The oil pump does not often need repairs or servicing, but when it does, it can negatively impact your engines performance and lifespan. An oil pump that is in a bad health will create several kinds of mechanical issues that can and will significantly harm your vehicle. The five most common signs that indicate a failing oil pump.
1. Decreased Oil Pressure
Your oil pump is the device that supplies and regulates the engine's oil pressure. It is responsible for pressurizing the lubricating oil in the engine and using that pressure to move the oil through the engine of the vehicle. This oil is in charge of keeping all of the engine components lubricated to reduce friction and remove heat. Pressurized oil is what keeps the engines internal parts moving freely. Improper oiling will cause these parts to rub together which creates heat and excessive wear in the motor. A bad oil pump will cause a reduction in oil pressure. Your vehicle will usually trigger a check engine light when this happens. This condition needs to be addressed immediately and not ignored. You will also notice reduced power levels, slow acceleration, sluggish performance from a standing start increased engine temperatures and a frequency of stalling out.
2. Higher Engine Operational Temperature
As the pressurized oil is supplied to the engine, it helps the critical internal moving parts remain cooler by decreasing the friction created by the moving internal components. When the oil pump is bad or failing, the engines operating temperature will increase beyond the normal limits when the engine is in use. This increased temperature happens because the regular flow of oil is now restricted and increased friction is occurring. When increased resistance occurs, the heat inside the engine is increased. The engine temperature gauge or high heat light on your dashboard will typically light up to alert you to high temperatures in the engine.
3. Noise in the Valve-Train
The valve-train system includes important components that keep your engine running. Besides hydraulic lifters; the valve-train also includes pushrods, valve guides, and seals. All of these components need proper oil flow for lubrication. Without adequate oil, these parts will stop functioning correctly or quietly. A faulty or failing oil pump can cause the valve-train to become quite noisy because of the reduced flow of engine oil to the valve train.
4. Unusual Hydraulic Lifters
Hydraulic lifters are critical components in the valve train mechanism of your vehicle. The hydraulic lifters need adequate oil lubrication to function correctly and quietly. A reduction in oil flow and pressure from the oil pump can cause oil not to make it to the engine's hydraulic lifters. When this happens, you will hear a lot of noise, and over time a lot of wear will occur, which will decrease the life of the hydraulic lifters.
5. Noisy Oil Pump
Unlike other symptoms, this may be the rarest. Oil pumps will not usually make a noise, but when it begins to go wrong and fail, it can make noise. Listen carefully to anything that sounds like whining or whirring. You will be able to hear these sounds when the engine is idling. The increased noise usually will indicate that the internal gears of the oil pump are wearing out and deteriorating.
