What does the oil pan gasket do?

The engine oil pan or engine sump is where the engines oil sits and waits until it is pumped around the engine. The oil pan gasket is the sealing device used to connect the oil pan to the engine block. The oil pan gaskets are designed to provide a leak-proof seal between these two engine parts. The oil pan gasket must engine high loads exerted by extreme temperatures and pressure loads for a long period of time. the gasket is what is between it and the bottom of the engine to prevent oil leaking out. OEM oil pan gaskets are considered a wear item and will need to be replaced at some point in time. The replacement of the oil pan gasket is dependent upon the engines use, operating conditions, service intervals, and lubricants.
